This month, a piece of space history will hit the auction block: Neil Armstrong’s rare 18k gold Omega Speedmaster Professional, nicknamed the “Tribute to Astronauts.” The watch, offered by RR Auction, holds deep ties to NASA’s golden era of exploration. Crafted as part of a limited run of 26 gold Speedmasters for astronauts,

Armstrong’s edition (Ref. BA 145.022) bears personalized engravings commemorating his groundbreaking missions, including “Astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, Gemini 8 – Apollo 11” and a poetic tribute to humanity’s race against time in space. Its caseback, marked No. 17, further cements its place among these coveted artifacts.
Designed to reflect its cosmic legacy, the watch blends luxury with symbolism. The 18k gold case frames a burgundy-red aluminum bezel and a solid gold dial stamped with “OM” (Or Massif), while onyx hour markers and gold hands edged in black add understated elegance. Inside ticks the Lemania-based caliber 861 movement—a technical marvel with 17 jewels and a steel brake, operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour.

Part of a legendary set of Apollo XI commemorative chronographs, this Speedmaster’s rarity and connection to Armstrong’s moonwalk have fueled its seven-figure estimate, with experts predicting bids over $2 million. Beyond its monetary value, the piece embodies a defining moment in human achievement.
The auction, set for April 17, 2025, at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge, Massachusetts, will support charities chosen by Armstrong’s son, Mark, ensuring the astronaut’s legacy extends beyond horology.
